The greatest significance of David’s life, however, is that he was the forerunner of a future King—Jesus—whose throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16). David was a crucial link in God’s ongoing covenant promises to mankind. First, God singled out Shem among Noah’s sons (Genesis 9:26–27); then He singled out Abraham from among Shem’s descendants (Genesis 11:10–26; 12:13); then He singled out Judah to be the founder of Israel’s royal line (Genesis 49:8–10); and finally, He singled out David to be the ancestor of Israel’s future King, in whom all of God’s covenant promises would be fulfilled (Matthew 1:1).
